The Home Depot gets personal in the US Virgin Islands. Store Leaders talk about why they work for one of the islands’ largest retailers.

When you hear the name The Home Depot, you probably think about tools, home-improvement or the color orange, but three leaders in the Virgin Islands want you to know that it is so much more.

With over 35 years of combined experience, Store Managers, Jennifer Johannes-Bass and Destin Thompson and District Manager Warren Cork have all found rewarding careers with the company. “It’s not about hammers and nails, it’s a people business. We’re connecting with people: our customers and our associates,” Cork said. “Everything we do for our associates and our communities are all geared around our values wheel.” The values wheel is the foundation for The Home Depot and features directives like “doing the right thing”, “taking care of our people” and “respect for all people.”

These values are what continue to retain some of our best people. “When I received my first merit award, I went to the bathroom and cried. I felt like it was the first time that my job cared about me and what I did,” Thompson said. “To this day, I can’t get over how great this company has been to me and my family. When the hurricane hit, The Home Depot really stepped up and made sure everyone was taken care of.”

Johannes-Bass echoed Thompson’s sentiments. “Other companies that I’ve worked for took care of management, but those of us underneath never saw bonuses. At The Home Depot, it’s all-around; the things The Home Depot does for the associates and managers … it’s amazing,” she said.

Cork learned early in his Home Depot career that his hard work would be rewarded. “[The Home Depot] really takes care of you. You can be what you want to be. If you want to be a store manager, all you have to do is put in the work. If you want to be a District Manager, that’s also possible. It all depends on what you want to get out of the position and what you’re willing to put in.”

While everyone goes to The Home Depot to find their home-improvement products, according to Johannes-Bass, Thompson and Cork, you may also find the perfect career opportunity. Learn more about available positions in St. Croix and St. Thomas.
